Son of Samuel Clifton and born at Guilsborough, Northants. in 1839 ; educated at Northampton Collegiate School, later passed through St. Thomas' Hospital, London, and the Medical School and the Anderson University, Glasgow, M.B.H.S. He joined the Leic. town council in 1882, became an alderman 9 November 1891 and was appointed a J.P. 1892. Past master of the Commercial Lodge of Freemasons, and for several years secretary and president of the Leic. branch of the N.S.P.C.C. During his mayoralty he inaugurated and raised by public subscription over £20,000 for War Funds, the Stella disaster sufferers and for local charities. He presided at the opening of the Western Park, on which occasion he planted an oak tree in commemora~ tion of the event.
AId. Dr. Clifton married in 1863 Miss Annie Abbot of Titchmarsh, Northants., but by her he had no issue. He died at No. 60, London Road, Leic., 23 February 1919, in his eightieth year, and was interred at the Welford Road Cemetery. M.I. Will proved at Leic. 7 May 1919 by William Arthur Clarke, solicitor, and John Henry Davis, Building Society's manager. Effects £9,359 6s. 9d. Resworn later £10,610 15s. 9d.
