A member of an old Leic. family being a son of Frederick Lennard; born 5 June 1851, educated at the Great Meeting School, attending for several years the Science classes conducted by the late Canon E. Atkins. Member of the Leic. Board of Guardians 1879, and largely instrumental in obtaining the establishment of the Cottage Homes at Countesthorpe for children, one of the first institutions of its kind in the country. He became a member of the council 5 October 1882 for All Saints' Ward, an alderman 9 November 1891 and was appointed a J.P. 1895 ; married in 1889 Annie, daughter of the late Sir Edward Wood, J.P., of Leic., and had issue, two sons and two daughters. During his mayoralty he inaugurated a local "Queen Victoria Memorial," personally collecting close upon £25,000.

AId. Lennard died suddenly at The Larches, Kirby Muxloe, a few weeks before completing his term of office 14 September 1901, aged fifty, and was buried with civic honours at the Welford Road Cemetery on Thursday, 19 September 1901. M.I. Probate of his will was granted at Leic. 22 November 1901 to Robert Hyslop, boot factor, and Reuben Robinson Preston, chartered accountant. Effects £46,695 19s. 5d.

 

(22 January 1901 Her Majesty Queen Victoria died at Osborne. Her son, Edward Prince of Wales, was pro­claimed at Leic. 25 January 1901 and crowned at Westminster as King Edward VII in August 1902).
