Son of Samuel Tollington of Great Wigston, co. Leic., and probably descended from the Torlingtons, originally written Turlington, of Birstall and Thorpe Satchville. Born at Great Wigston 9 April 1850, he joined the business as an assistant of the late Mr. W. Borham about 1865, and eventually became the proprietor of it after the latter's death. He entered the council 2 November 1891 for No. 7 Ward in the liberal interest, was elected an alderman 30 April 1907 and appointed a magistrate in 1917. For many years he was closely associated with the Wesleyan body at Bishop Street Chapel. He married Susannah, eldest daughter of William Brice of Leic., by whom he had a large family of four sons and three daughters.
AId. Tollington died at his residence, London Road, Leic., 8 March 1921, aged seventy, and was buried at the Welford Road Cemetery. Probate of his will was granted at Leic. 20 September 1921 to Susannah Tollington, widow, William Arthur Tollington, seed merchant, and Richard Arthur Bowes, company manager director, the executors. Effects £17,120 18s. 4d.
