Born of humble parents in Russell Street, Leic., 6 January 1856, being a son of William Sherriff, a glove frameworker, and believed to be descended from the Sheriffs or Sherriffs of Oxford county. For seventeen years he was a member of the Leic. Board of Guardians and for a time chairman of that body.
Mr. Sherriff entered the council chamber for the West Humberstone Ward in 1908 and except for a short period (1923-4) retained his seat until 1928. He was placed on the Commission of the Peace for the borough in 1921 and elected an alderman 26 November 1928, a position he still retains as a member of the corporation.
He married in 1882 Annie, daughter of Samuel Bagnall of Ashby de la Zouch and later of Leic., by whom, who was born at Ashby de la Zouch and is still living, he has had issue, four sons and one daughter.
