Son of Thomas. Walker of Newtown Linford, co. Leic., and descended from the Walkers of that neighbourhood, a family traceable back to the reign of James 1. He was born at Leic. 11 August 1856. Like many of his fellow citizens he acquired much of his educational equipment at the Vaughan Working Men's College, later became Superintendent of the Primitive Methodist Sunday School in Curzon Street, and a Lay Preacher.
He joined the council 20 November 1900, being then returned for West Humberstone Ward in the interest of the liberal party, a seat he held continuously until elected an alderman 26 June 1923. In 1929 he was appointed a magistrate for the city.
Important events of his year of office:-Two visits to Leic. by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales who was received by Ald. Walker, mayor. The opening and Hallowing of the Cathedral Church of St. Martin in February 1927 and the Primitive Methodist Conventual Conference in June of the same year.
Mr. Ald. Walker married twice, (1) in August 1878 Martha Burton, by whom he had issue, and (2) 12 June 1918 Florence Gertrude Mincher. No issue of the second union. He resigned his seat as a member of the corporation in 1934.
