(483)

(Retired Builder and Contractor).

A son of the late William Cort, of Market Harborough, born in humble circumstances on the 18th March, 1868. His rise to his present position shows a tenacity of purpose and a true example of democracy. He commenced work at the age of 10 as a part time telegraph boy delivering telegrams within a four mile radius of Market Harborough, attending school when his work permitted. At the age of 13 he left school and started work in a Market Harborough factory and after three years his health forced him to take outside work on a farm. At the age of 19 his health having improved he became a bricklayer's labourer and ultimately founded in Leicester the firm of W. J. Cort & Sons Ltd., Builders and Contractors.

He has always been a staunch Liberal and was returned to the City Council for the Spinney Hill Ward in March 1924, which Ward he continues to represent. He was a Member of the late Board of Guardians for some years. He has been an active worker on the Council and is Chairman of the Housing Committee, where his practical knowledge as a Builder has been most useful.

Councillor Cort married twice (1) in 1889 Elizabeth Ann Gregg of Leicester, by whom he had issue and (2) in 1936 Louisa Mortimer.

Residence- Uppingham Road, Leicester.

William Cort died on 24th February 1953
