Born at King's Lynn, Norfolk, on the 17th February 1896; eldest daughter of William Edward and Rebecca Ashton. Educated at St. Margaret's School, King's Lynn.

Married Frederick John Jackson in September 1923 and has one son, born October 1925. Mrs. Jackson came to Leicester in August 1919 having previously served as a Civilian Clerk with the Royal Flying Corps.

During the 1939 - 45 war, she was appointed by the then Minister of Labour (The Rt. Hon. Ernest Bevin, M.P.) as Employment Officer with the Ministry of Labour and National Service-a post she held until October 1945 when she resigned on being nominated as a candidate for the Municipal Elections held in November of that year.

In November 1945 she was elected as a Councillor for Charnwood Ward and represented that Ward until elected to the Aldermanic Bench in 1964.

Alderman Mrs. Jackson served as Lady Mayoress of Leicester during the year of Office of her husband (Alderman F. J. Jackson) in 1957 58, and was appointed High Bailiff of the City on the 25th July 1961. Her election as the fourth woman Lord Mayor in the City's history on the 23rd May, 1963, gave her the unique distinction of being the first member of the Council ever to have held the three Offices of Lord Mayor, Lady Mayoress and High Bailiff. During her year of Office she was accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. P. M. Jackson, as Lady Mayoress.

Alderman Mrs. Jackson has been Chairman of the Welfare, Publicity and the former Mental Deficiency Committees and the Mental Health Subcommittee and also Vice Chairman of the Training Colleges Subcommittee. She has also served on the Allotments, Children's, Education, Estates, Health, Housing, Parks, Transport and Watch Committees. As Chairman of the Welfare Committee she has given unstintingly of her time and energy in connection with the welfare of the elderly.

For sixteen years she was a member of the No. 3 Hospital Management Committee and the Cromer Area Hospital Management Committee. Alderman Mrs. Jack~ son is a member of the Southern Region for the Blind Committee, the Employment Committee of the Ministry of Labour and the National Assistance Committee. She is a Governor and Manager of several schools in the City.

During her year of Office, Alderman Mrs. Jackson continued her great interest in the welfare of the aged and inaugurated a Fund to provide a Holiday Home for the Elderly. As a result, the Ellaland Hotel, Milford on Sea, Hampshire, was purchased with the proceeds of her Appeal and presented to the City in 1964.
