Councillor Mary Draycott
Councillor Draycott was born in Leicester and was educated at the Thurnby Lodge Primary and Spencefield Secondary School.
Elected to serve the Coleman Ward, first on Leicestershire County Council from 1989 – 1996 and on the City Council from 1991.
Over the years, Councillor Draycott served on a number of committees. From 1992 – 1994 former Police Committee, 1996 – 1999 Environment Agency Est Midlands REPAC, a member of the Fire Authority 1997 - 2004 and served as Chair/Cabinet Lead for Finance and as Deputy Leader of the City Council.
In addition, Councillor Draycott served as Justice of the Peace (Leicester Bench) 1997 - 2004 and School Governor at Rowlatts Hill Primary School from 1989.
In 1969, Mary married Raymond and they have two daughters, Carol and Kate.
The Lord Mayor's chosen charity was The Better Health Appeal and was to provide:
A Mammotome, a sophisticated piece of equipment for breast cancer
A state of the art operating camera system, providing a less invasive surgery for patients suffering with prostate cancer,
and
A Broncoscope which gives detailed pictures of patients’ airways to help researchers further understand why some patients suffer severe asthma.
