Key Stage 1
All 7 year old children are assessed by their teachers in the three core subjects of English, maths and science. They are also assessed using standard assessments in reading, writing and number skills. The results of each assessment are reported on a 5 point scale. A typical 7 year old is expected to have reached level 2. In 1997, 67% of Leicester's 7 year olds achieved level 2 in the reading assessments compared with 80% nationally.
The chart shows that the low levels of achievement are spread across the city. In only a small number of areas are levels of achievement close to national expectations. These are predominantly in the south east of the city.
