Standardised Mortality Rates

Standardised Mortality Rates
Standardised Mortality Rates (SMRs) are calculated to compensate for the fact that men and women have different death rates and that these rates are also vary by age.

The ones presented opposite were produced by Leicestershire Health and were based on the number of people living in the City who were aged under 65. The figures have also been averaged over the period 1992 to 1996.

Scores of above 100 equate to areas with above average death rates; a value of under 100 implies a below average death rate.

The wards of North Braunstone, Wycliffe and Castle stand out as having mortality rates much higher than expected.

At the other extreme, East and West Knighton alongwith Latimer and Spinney Hill have much lower mortality rates than one would anticipate.
