The vacant commercial properties were identified from the void records on the National Non-Domestic Rating system. There were 2,363 records that fell into this category when the data were extracted in January 1998.
However, it should be noted that not all records were buildings as some would be land parcels for advertising hoardings for instance. The list below describes the most frequent former uses of properties which account for two-thirds of the voids.
