The Building Control Group administers the Building Regulations and maintains standards of health, safety and energy conservation in most building schemes, including new buildings, alterations and extensions.
The Building Control section includes information on:
The Building Regulations 1991 require that plans are approved within the statutory period and, when work commences on site, inspections are made at various stages to ensure compliance with the Regulations. This part of the service is required to be self-financing and it is subject to competition from approved private inspectors.
Advice is available to anyone intending to carry out work. Pre-application meetings are encouraged for larger projects, particularly with regard to fire safety matters.
Other main areas of responsibility include:
- Dealing with dangerous buildings and structures to ensure public safety
- Control of demolitions under the Building Act 1984
The Building Control Section is accredited to BS EN ISO 9002 with the British Standards Institution. Contact us for advice or information.
Note that building works and changes of use usually need planning permission. See Development Control.
