The Government Office for the East Midlands European Funding Secretariat manage two main structural Funds, the European Regional Development Fund and the European Social Fund.

European Regional Development Fund (ERDF): Provides support for projects which encourage and facilitate industrial regeneration and revival in areas where the decline of traditional industries has caused serious economic and social problems, as well as rural areas needing economic development. Attention is concentrated on investment which can create new jobs e.g. creating new business parks, helping communities to use IT, and support for businesses to expand.

European Social Fund (ESF): This fund aims to help reduce unemployment and improve and develop the skills of employed people, help create and protect jobs in areas in decline or of low economic development, support the National Action Plan for Employment that is produced every year by the UK government. The social fund also aims to make sure that support meets the most serious needs.
