HEALTH AND SAFETY STARTER PACK FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

The Health and Safety Team have produced a starter pack on health and safety aimed at small businesses located within Leicester. The Information Pack provides in depth, up-to-date information on health and safety requirements. A summary of each section is given below.

REQUIREMENTS FOR BUSINESS REGISTRATION
All employers are legally required to register with their enforcing authority. The Business Pack outlines which premises and how to register.

HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY 
This details what information should be included in a statement/policy, how to write a policy and a useful checklist.

HEALTH AND SAFETY POSTER/LEAFLET
It is a legal requirement to display the prescribed health and safety law poster or provide employees with a copy of the presribed leaflet.

RISK ASSESSMENTS
This Section explains how to go about doing a risk assessment and a checklist to ensure all hazards are covered.

FIRST AID PROVISION IN LOW HAZARD WORKPLACES
This Section explains what first aid arrangements businesses must make for their staff. A checklist is included.

WORKPLACE ACCIDENTS/INCIDENTS 
This Section explains what businesses must do, in relation to recording and reporting of accidents.

LIFTING AND HANDLING
This Section details the legal requirements, assessments that need to be carried out, training involved, and how to minimise risks in rleation to liftind and handling activities.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELFARE
This Sction deals with minimum workplace requirements relating to including temperatures, lighting, ventilation, toilets, drinking water, rest areas etc. A useful checklist is also included.

HOURS OF WORK
This Section explains the implications of the Working Time Regulations 1998 on businesses and the restrictions that apply in relation to working hours.

VDU'S AND OTHER SIMILAR EQUIPMENT
This Section explains the legal requirements, assessments that are needed and the control measures that may have to be put in place, in relation to the use of VDU's in the workplace.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
This Section details the tests, examinations and safety systems needed to ensure that electrical equipment and electrical installations are safe and without risks. To help businesses two separate checklists are also provided.

WORK EQUIPMENT
This section details work equipment requirements for businesses.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
This Section explains how to provide suitable and sufficient personal protective equipment to meet legal requirements.

FIRE SAFETY FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
This section details fire safety legal requirements including detection devices, fire fighting equipment, means of escape, training, good housekeeping and the role of the fire service.

LEICESTER CITY COUNCIL:
The City Council has a Health and Safety Enforcement Policy. A copy is included in the Business Pack.
