Paediatric first aid

This two-day course focuses on emergency scenarios that face those looking after young children and infants.

Topics covered

Candidates will become familiar with the role of the paediatric first aider and be able to assess and react appropriately to an emergency situation, including providing first aid for a child or infant who:

  • is unresponsive and needs to receive CPR
  • has an airway obstruction
  • is suffering from shock
  • is wounded and bleeding
  • has a fracture or dislocation
  • has a head, neck or back injury
  • has a condition effecting the eyes, ears or nose
  • has a chronic medical condition or sudden illness
  • is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and/or cold
  • has been poisoned
  • has been bitten or stung
  • has sustained an electric shock

Examination/assessment and award

The course consists of two units, delivered over two days. Candidates are continually assessed by the trainer during the course. All successful candidates will be awarded a Paediatric first aid certificate, valid for three years and a wallet sized plastic card detailing their qualifications.
