Welcome to our new website

Read more about the changes we've made.

Food safety

All food business establishments are legally obliged to register with their local authority before opening.

Further information

There is no charge and the registration cannot be refused. Once registered it is not necessary to re-register, unless there is a significant change in the business (such as a name change, or change of food business operator).

Food hygiene inspections

Environmental health officers may inspect food premises without having to make an appointment or giving advanced notice. The frequency of our visits depends on:

  • Type of food being handled
  • People at risk.
  • How the business is managed.
  • The condition of the premises.
  • Any complaints that we have received.

We will rate your premises using the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme

Food hygiene training

All food handlers should gain a Level 2 Certificate in Food Hygiene (formally a Basic Food Hygiene Certificate). Food business establishment operators are also required to receive adequate training in the application of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP)

We offer a number of food hygiene training courses.

Producing food of animal origin

You will need approval from the city council if your establishment produces and sells foods of animal origin to other businesses. These products include meat products, minced meat and meat preparations, dairy products, fishery products and egg products.
