From Sunday 1st July 2007 all enclosed public places and workplaces in England will be required by law to become smokefree. This will include offices, factories, shops, pubs, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, membership clubs, taxis, public transport and work vehicles that are used by more than one person.
The smoke free legislation applies to public places and enclosed workplaces. Businesses must consider what measures to put into place for their premises and their employees to meet these new legal duties.
Some businesses are considering providing smoking shelters for their staff and customers to use. These structures will need to comply not only with the new Smokefree Regulations but also planning, noise, licensing and building control legislation. The Smokefree Team has developed in-depth guidance for businesses considering installing smoking shelters.
You can obtain advice from the City Council on whether a proposed smoking shelter is likely to be acceptable. Please download the attachment at the bottom of this page.
The smoking shelter guidelines are also attached below, alternatively they are available upon request from the Smokefree Team.
