Status
Domestic waste collection and recycling
The review is seeking to establish whether the contracts are providing a suitable standard of service for the city’s residents and whether they are achieving the targets set by the Council. The Task Group has received presentations form officers as well as visiting recycling centres and accompanying Biffa operatives on waste collection routes.
The Task Group expects to deliver its final report to OSMB in June or July 2008
Leicestershire and Leicester Waste Development Framework
The Task Group reviewed the proposals form the Regeneration and Culture Department on carrying out the statutory public consultations to develop a new strategy, which will replace the Waste Local Plan.

Recycling and composing performance indicators
The Task Group, at the request of the Performance and Value for Money Select Committee (PVMSC), investigated the Council’ underperformance against its targets for recycling and composing

Spare capacity at the Biffa Bursom Ball Mill
The Task Group investigated the current underutilisation of capacity at the Ball mill

Future work Programme
 
 
The Task Group set up a panel of experts to advise on future priorities for review. The Council’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme Reports for 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 were used as the basis for reaching conclusions.
 
The Task Group identified the following topics for future reviews:
 
  • Procurement of goods and services
  • Bottled water coolers
  • Council waste
  • Graffiti
  • Environmental Champions
  • Elected Member awareness/training
  • Implementation of the EST review of fleet vehicles
  • Environmental standards in cleaning contracts
  • Traffic lights
  • Built environment (included by OSMB)

Building Schools for the Future (BSF)
 
 
 
The Task group is carrying out a joint investigation with the Children and Young People’s Task Group into aspects of the Council’s Building Schools for the Future Programme.
 
The investigation is looking at two aspects:
 
  • The extent to which sustainability was built into the school curriculum in phase 1 schools and plans for phase 2.
 
  • How is BSF delivering infrastructure in order to drive down carbon emissions?
 
 
The Task Groups expects to deliver their  final report to OSMB in  the summer.
Combined Heat and Power
The Task Group is carrying out a review into the proposed combined heat and power system for the Council's district heat network.
 
The investigation will look at:
 
* Impact on tenants
* Environmental implications
* Bonds
 
The Task Group expects to deliver their final report to OSMB in January 2009
