How do I register to vote?

There are two ways you can register to vote.
• During the rolling registration from January to September, or
• During our annual canvass from October to December.

Am I automatically registered if I pay council tax?

No, the Council Tax Register and the Electoral Register are two separate registers and are completely different.

I’m not sure if I’m on the Electoral Register?

If you are not sure, just contact Electoral Services  to find out. 


How can I vote?

You can vote in three ways – in person, by post or by proxy.

What do I need to take if I vote in person?

If you’re registered to vote, you don’t need to take anything. Staff at the Polling Station will check your details when you arrive.

 

Where do I go to vote?

If you vote in person, you’ll need to go to your local Polling Station.

 

When you get your Polling Card (usually a few weeks before Election Day) this will state where you need to go.

I am a disabled voter - what help can I get?

For disabled voters, we try to ensure we offer:
• polling stations with level or ramped access
• polling booths are accessible by wheelchair
• large print ballot papers and special aids to help blind or partially sighted voters.

 

If you can’t get to a Polling Station, you can vote by post or proxy.


Voters with a disability can also have a permanent proxy vote. Contact Electoral Services for more information.

I live overseas - how do I register to vote?

If you live overseas and want to vote, you need to register as an overseas voter. Please contact Electoral Services for an application pack.

I am a foreign national - can I still vote in UK elections?

Yes. Any foreign national living overseas can vote in the UK up to 15 years after they last registered to vote.

 

You can vote in the:
• UK Parliamentary (general) elections
• European Parliamentary elections in the UK.

 

However, you cannot vote in:
• Local elections, or
• Mayoral elections.

How does a student register to vote?

There are two ways you can register to vote:

• Rolling registration from January to September
• Annual canvass during October to December.

 

Students can also register at both your home address and your term-time address.

I am in the Armed Forces, how do I register to vote?

If you’re in the Armed Forces, you can register to vote as a Service Voter or an ordinary voter.
