Overseas Voters

Anyone living overseas
Anyone living overseas

Any British Citizen living overseas is entitled to vote in the UK for a period of 15 years after they were last registered on the electoral register.

You can vote in the:
• UK Parliamentary (general) elections
• UK Referendums and
• European Parliamentary elections in the UK.

However, you will not be able to vote in:
• Local Elections, or
• Mayoral Elections.

If you have never been registered to vote in the UK, you will not be eligible to register as an overseas voter. However, if you left the UK before you were 18 years of age you can register at your parents or guardians address, providing you left the UK no more than 15 years ago.

You can still join our Electoral Register so you can vote in future elections. Not sure what to do?  Please contact us:

How do I vote?

You can vote by post but you will need to bear in mind that postal ballot packs are sent out about a week prior to an election. You need to ensure there will be enough time for the ballot pack to reach you and be returned to us.

You can appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf. Someone in the UK can be appointed by you, to go to the polling station and vote on your behalf.

If you would like a postal or proxy vote, please contact us on 0116 2527110. Or email electoral.services@leicester.gov.uk for more information.
