Trees and woodlands

We are responsible for the maintenance of trees and woodlands across the city. We believe that trees are a valuable resource to the city and we aim to maintain their condition and their numbers.

To maintain our trees we inspect them on a regular basis. As trees change slowly these inspections can be several years apart.

As a result of our inspections our maintenance teams are constantly at work throughout the city to ensure the safety and health of the trees in our care.

Due to the limited resources available and the large number of trees, we prioritise work related to the safety and health of our trees. Other work is added to our programme for completion as soon as the resources become available.

We try to keep work to trees to a minimum although an apparently healthy tree can be concealing dangerous weaknesses or rot.

Many of the trees we enjoy and admire today were planted by our predecessors.
