All the flavours of Christmas at Leicester Market

Published on 16 December 2016

LEICESTER’S famous market is gearing up for the busiest week of the year by filling its stalls with everything you need for the perfect Christmas dinner.

As well as offering the freshest fruit and vegetables, the market’s also the place to go for turkeys and chickens, hams and sausages, dates and figs, and an impressive selection of cheese for your festive cheeseboard.

There’s also a huge range of fresh fish – and all the ingredients you’d need for a nut roast, with chestnuts, almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts all available at a fraction of the price charged by the supermarkets.

Deputy city mayor Cllr Rory Palmer said: “Christmas is an expensive time of year, so it’s even more important to look for the best deals – and make your money go a little bit further.

“Leicester Market offers great value for money – but it also offers great quality, huge choice, and a unique shopping experience with friendly customer service.

“If you’re cooking a traditional Christmas dinner, or you fancy something different – like fresh salmon, or a spicy vegetarian dish – you’ll find everything you need in the outdoor market or in the new food hall.”

The bright and airy food hall has been serving shoppers with fresh meat and fish, cooked meats and sausages, and cheese and deli produce since it opened in May 2014.

Lucasz Kotula of Kotula and Son Polish Deli – which is one of eight specialist stalls in the food hall – is looking forward to the Christmas rush.

“This is always a busy time of year, but we’re ready with everything you need for your Christmas menu,” he said.

“Here in the food hall you can pick up some fresh fish for dinner on Christmas Eve, a wide selection of meat for lunch on Christmas Day, and our delicious Polish sausages and Christmas hams for Boxing Day.”

The outdoor market is open from Monday to Saturday, opening from 8am to 5pm on Christmas Eve (Saturday 24 December). The market will then re-open after Christmas at 8am on Wednesday 28 December.

The food hall is also open from Monday to Saturday. Opening hours on Christmas Eve will be from 8am until 3pm. The food hall will then close for Christmas and re-open at 8am on Thursday 29 December.
