Children’s best book to be announced
Published on 13 June 2017
CHILDREN at city primary schools have been busy voting for their favourite read as part of an annual scheme to find Leicester's 'best book'.
Five authors have been shortlisted for the ‘Our Best Book 2017’ award, with the winner due to be announced at a special event on Thursday (15 June) at the Leicester Tigers’ ground.
This is the 11th year that the award scheme has run, with around 2,000 children from 38 city primary schools taking part. All the shortlisted books have been read, discussed and reviewed by the children – who have then voted for their favourites to help select this year’s winning title.
The shortlisted books are:
Evil Emperor Penguin by Laura Ellen Anderson
Electric Girl by Jo Cotterill
Ghost Prison by Joseph Delaney
Dave Pigeon by Swapna Haddow
The Accidental Secret Agent by Tom McLaughlin
Cllr Sarah Russell, assistant city mayor for children and schools, said: "Books play a key role in developing children’s imagination, language and writing skills, so it’s really important that we encourage our young people to read more.
“The ‘Our Best Book’ award is a great way to help 9 to 11-year-olds develop a passion for reading and gives them an opportunity to talk about the books that they’ve really enjoyed with their friends.”
Each school receives 95 new books as part of the scheme, with the aim of inspiring and motivating children in year five and six to be active readers.
Around 350 children and adults, representing all the participating schools, will attend the ceremony.
Assistant city mayor for neighbourhood services, Cllr Kirk Master, will present the award to the winning author.
He said: "This competition has highlighted some of the best children’s books over the last 10 years, introducing children to authors and writing that they will love.
“All of these books – and thousands more – are waiting to be discovered and enjoyed, free of charge, from Leicester’s libraries.”
The award ceremony will include author talks, school performances inspired by the books and displays put together by the children.
‘Our Best Book 2017’ is a partnership between Leicester Libraries, Leicester primary schools, Creative Learning Services, and the ‘Whatever It Takes’ Reading Campaign.
