A marble terrazzo pavement with blue and white background, inlaid with terrazzo and digital images of butterflies in protective glass roundels.
The butterfly images are drawn from the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery's nationally acclaimed collection representing species found around the globe on five continents. Others were chosen by the public from computer drawn and manipulated images created by the artist and local people during workshops.
"The Butterfly pavement was inspired by the Museum Collection and explorer Henry Walter Bates. Bates is an example of a 'hidden history' of New Walk, ....The concept that developed was to take the Museum 'for a walk' making the invisible, visible by working with the collection to bring images of the life cycle of butterflies and moths from all continents to New Walk. A contemporary visual acknowledgement of the work of Bates and the spectacle of Nature globally."
