Entrances and Gateways

Leicester has numerous physical entrances: visual and symbolic gateways linking the city and its neighbourhoods, each possessing its own unique character.  Public art projects in these areas have an impact on local residents and visitors alike, providing visual references and reinforcing the identity of the city while retaining local distinctiveness.

The artworks commissioned for the Entrances sites of the new district of Hamilton, the Belgrave corridor and St George's have created distinctive landmarks that provide a physical presence and a visual anchor both day and night, expresssed through form, light and colour.  The artworks aim to change the perception of the main arterial routes as barriers, contributing to local character and creating distinctive urban reference points.
