A series of four interrelated works – rectangular panels embedded into the canal towpath, each consisting of several etched brass component panels.
The interactive paving is installed within a 60 metre stretch of the canal towpath between Frog Island and St Margaret’s Way. Each section is supported by a steel frame sunk into the ground that allows each component panel to slightly tilt backwards and forwards, creating a sound and rhythm when cycled or walked across. The movement is so slight that it is not apparent to the user or onlooker.
The artist collaborated with Simon Atkinson, a musician from De Montfort University Music Technology Department, to create a life size model of the installation to test the sound.
Text, poems and images engraved on the component panels were created through artist led community workshops and an artist-in-residence hosted at Fosse Arts Centre.
"Chime Lines seeks to link, and to some extent commemorate, a disappearing past with the direct experience of today's Waterway user."
