The Neighbourhood

St. George's is located in the heart of the city centre and is currently undergoing a major regeneration programme to establish new communities and the vibrant Cultural Quarter. The Peepul Centre bounded by the neighbouring established inner city communities of St. Matthew’s, St. Marks and Belgrave.

The Artwork

Art on the Move, a series of sculptural light columns with integrated movement activated lights, which are used to define and interpret the journey between the Cultural Quarter and the Peepul Centre. The aim is to make the route between the two locations more enjoyable and easier to follow: Demarcating and highlighting places of interest and activities along the way.

The artist has created new lighting columns as well as sculptural forms attached to existing street lighting columns. The light sequence can be programmed or movement activated, creating light sculptures that glow like jewels to mark the route.

"Inspiration comes from the way that people and vehicles use the road and pavements, the ordinary everyday use of the street & public spaces, as well as celebratory, carnival and processional use"

Location:
Bespoke lighting columns and light forms attached to existing street lighting columns, marking a route between the Cultural Quarter to the Peepul Centre.  The route runs from the Rutland and Humberstone Street junction in the Cultural Quarter, along Wharf Street South, across St. Matthew’s Way (main road), Kamloops Crescent, leading into Taylor Road, across Dysart Way (main road) and into Orchardson Avenue to the Peepul Centre entrance.
