The Neighbourhood

Geographically, Beaumont Leys lies north west of Leicester city centr. It is a mixed use district with predominantly 1970's residential housing and light industrial units.  The area is host to various pocket parks, leisure facilities and a large district shopping centre.  Leicester Housing Association (LHA) owns and manages around 300 homes on Beaumont Leys, based primarily around Milton Crescent, Calver Hey Road and Upper Temple Walk.

The Artwork

A hard and soft landscaped Ball Court and Community Garden, with integrated artworks including decorative enamel panels, tabletops, seating, concrete relief panels and glasswork.

Working together with local people, and following a feasibility study commissioned through SRB5 funds, the artist and the project team responded to community requests to change a small and underused public open space into an attractive area to be enjoyed by the whole community. Ian Stemp Landscape Architect translated the artist's designs into construction drawings.

Some residents' comments:

"A basketball court would be great... we love watching children play... a peaceful garden would be used by all... lets raise awareness via a fun-day in summer..."
