Dress The World: Suits and Saris

Suits & Saris at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery

Dress The World:
Suits & Saris
31st March –
7th October 2012
(This exhibition is now closed)
New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester

Celebrate and debate the fusion of British and South Asian fashion traditions in the Suits & Saris exhibition.

Visually explore global and Leicester fashion stories and how they have influenced the clothes you wear. The exhibition also profiles the previously unexplored aspects of British Asian fashion worlds, such as the role of East African Asians in Leicester.

Fusion Fashion, looks at how British and South Asian clothing influences are translated on the high street. Street Style includes a series of specially commissioned photographs taken on New Walk during summer 2011 profiling Leicester’s style.

Body Conscious looks at how wearing types of clothing make us feel and in Respectability, different generations' feelings about clothing are told through the stories of two families living in Leicester.

Wardrobe Stories invites you to think about how clothes show your own personality. Building a Collection offers an opportunity to think how museums represent us and Trading Places turns the spotlight back on Leicester, looking at how South Asian and East African Asian migrants helped to transform Belgrave Road into a centre for British Asian fashion.

Suits & Saris has been developed with young people playing a central role in curating the exhibition. Youth curators and community curators have informed the exhibition development and the New Walk Museum & Art Gallery Youth Panel leading on website development, contemporary collecting and photography.
