Publishing information about your Community Group on the Internet

There are many community groups and organisations in Leicester. Communities can be made up of people who live in a particular neighbourhood in the city e.g. Evington Village, or they can be a community sharing something in common - age group e.g. youth, faith, interest e.g. football, and so on.

Here are a few important questions you should think about before you go any further.

  • Who is your intended audience?

  • Are you sure the information you want to publish is not already available elsewhere?

  • Are there any websites you can approach to work with as partners rather than start your own new website?

  • How long do you intend to keep the website live for?

  • How will you maintain and update the website?

If your community group wants to exchange information with group members or with others, or you want to promote your group then you may want to consider the following options.

Infolinx*

Infolinx is a Community Information website, covering Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. Infolinx holds details of over 7,000 clubs, societies, organisations and self help groups based in the region.

If you want to add your group’s details to Infolinx simply fill in and submit the online form on their website.

Creating your own community website

Many organisations provide facilities to create your own community website or webpages ‘free of charge’. They are called web hosts.

Here are just a few based in Leicester and the UK.

Leicester Disability Information Network

The Leicester Disability Information Network has developed a website to provide information for people with disabilities and their carers – assistance, benefits, jobs, housing, leisure, training and much more. It allows users to publish certain types of information on the website, examples include views, news and events.

Voluntary Action Leicester (VAL)*

VAL helps voluntary and community groups and local charities in their development. VAL is developing a new searchable online database of voluntary groups in Leicester, which should be useful to local groups and users.

BBC Leicester*

The Community Web Links webpage on the BBC Leicester website has links to local community groups’ websites. If your group already has a website, contact BBC Leicester*.

Beehive Leicestershire*

Beehive Leicestershire is an online network devoted to the county's community groups. If you represent a not-for-profit organisation, then you can join the Beehive and create a website for your group for ‘free’.

Although advertising local businesses is the main focus, local clubs, voluntary agencies, helplines, counselling services, and charities are promoted free. It is sponsored by Thomson Local Directories.

Community Website Builder*

The Community Website Builder allows registered UK charities, non-profit making organisations and volunteer led groups or organisations to build and maintain their own website ‘free of charge’.

Other free website providers

You can also find and compare other ‘free’ website providers by looking on the Internet. Free Webspace* is a directory list of free website providers, with over 600 top free web space hosts with reviews and ratings.

For example, Yahoo! GeoCities* provides users with facilities to create their own webpages. It claims to be one of the largest on the web.

Choosing a website provider

Here are some things to think about when choosing a website provider.

Ease of use:
  • Do they provide easy to use tools to design your website or do you need technical knowledge or skill?
  • If they do provide tools, are they flexible enough to meet your needs?
  • Do they offer a range of attractive templates to create your website?
  • Can these be modified?
  • Are they easy to use?
  • Is there too much advertising?

Storage:
  • How much space do you receive for your website?

Email:
  • Are e-mail accounts included?

Speed:
  • How quickly does the webpage or website appear?

Help:
  • Is help available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?
  • Is help available by phone, or only by email?

Commitment and Reliability:
  • How long has the website provider been in existence?
  • Are they reputable?
  • How long is the subscription you are signing up for and can you cancel at any time?
  • Do they make any guarantees about "uptime" - the percentage of time per month your site will be available to visitors?
