Abandoned Vehicles

We investigate and deal with vehicles abandoned on the highway according to the DEFRA guidelines.
Defra offer no legal definition of abandonment, however the following characteristics are generally common to abandoned vehicles assisting Local Authority Officers in making a decision on abandonment:
- An untaxed vehicle
- No current vehicle keeper on the DVLA records
- The vehicle has been stationary for a period of time, e.g. weed growth etc.
- The vehicle is significantly damaged, run down or unroadworthy
- The vehicle is burned out
- One or both number plates are missing
- The vehicle contains waste.
The procedure we follow allows the council to remove the vehicles from city streets quickly which means that anyone leaving a vehicle untaxed has little time to put this right.
If a vehicle is removed it will then be destroyed by an approved contractor on behalf of Leicester City Council.
Abandoned vehicles on private land
We can remove abandoned vehicles from private land, with the consent of the landowner.
Reporting incidents
Members of the public can report abandoned vehicles by contacting us.
Incidents can also be reported using the Leicester-Shire Streetscene online form.
As much as possible of the following information should be provided when making a report:
- Date
- Exact location
- Make and model
- Registration (if any)
- Colour
- Whether taxed and the date on the disc
- Your details, and any other information that may be relevant.
