Beacon Council
The Beacon Council award is a prestigious government award that recognises good practice in a wide range of local government services.
The scheme has now been running for six years. Leicester City Council has been awarded 'Beacon Status' in each of these years - the only council in the Midlands to have achieved this accolade and one of only two in the country to win an award every year.

- In 2006 Leicester City Council was awarded Beacon Status in the category of Culture and Sport for Hard to Reach Groups.
- In 2005 Leicester City Council was awarded Beacon Status in the category of Sustainable Energy.
- In 2004 Leicester City Council was awarded Beacon Status in the category of Housing Renewal.
- In 2003 Leicester City Council was awarded Beacon Status in two categories - Tackling Homelessness and Community Cohesion.
- In 2002 Leicester City Council was awarded Beacon Status in the category of Promoting Racial Equality.
- In 2001 Leicester City Council was awarded Beacon Status in the category of Maintaining a Quality Environment.
- In 2000 Leicester City Council was awarded Beacon Status in the category of Improving Housing Maintenance.
