You already have the right of access to information other organisations or people hold about you, your 'personal data', under the Data Protection Act 1998. Please see our related section on Data Protection for further information.
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) came into force on 1st January 2005.

FOIA introduces a general right of access to all information not covered by the Data Protection Act 1998 held by a public authority. FOI defines a public authority. There are over 70,000 of them. Leicester City Council is one.
Under data protection laws personal data remains confidential. However, with a few exceptions, other information must be given to anyone who requests it. Anyone can request recorded information held by the Council, which could include for example statistics, reports, minutes of meetings or procedures we use and we must deal with all requests for information in 20 working days.
If you would like to make a request for information, your request must:
Be in writing;
Have sufficient detail for us to find the information you want; and
Have an address for us to reply to you at.
It would be helpful if you could also provide details such as a telephone number or an e-mail address in case we need to contact you.
