Susan Bain

Susan transferred to OFSTED in April 2007 following 5 years experience as an inspector with the Adult Learning Inspectorate.  Previous work with South Yorkshire and Humber Region Open College Network as quality and audit manager and accreditation co-ordinator involved regional responsibility for quality improvement and accreditation development.  This work extended across a wide range of sectors including adult and community education (ACL), youth and community, prison education, council workforce development, further education colleges and private training providers.  More recent inspection work encompasses probation service provision in education, training and employment.

Prior teaching and management experience in adult and community education, community arts including family learning, and school based teaching.  Susan taught visual and creative subjects, and alterative curriculum programmes in secondary schools. Within the former Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI) she had a particular interest in adult and community learning and now holds the regional point of reference post for ACL in the Ofsted northern region.  Past and current inspection responsibilities extend to the inspection of prison education, work-based learning and FE colleges.  Susan was closely involved in the development of new inspection methodology for council learning and skills provision.  She contributed to survey reports about the distinctiveness of ACL, non-accredited learning and an investigation into the leadership and management of prison education, and is currently contributing to survey work about the impact NLDC provision makes in the regeneration of deprived communities. Susan has been CRB cleared.
