Will I get paid for duties as a councillor?

There is no salary for being a councillor. However, you will be paid an allowance to reimburse you for time and expenses incurred whilst on Council business.

Every Leicester City Councillor is entitled to a basic allowance, currently £6,720 a year, paid into a bank account in 12 monthly instalments along with an additional £91.16 per month to cover all Council related travelling and subsistence within the City. Some councillors are given an additional allowance to cover any special responsibilities such as Cabinet member, scrutiny chair/spokesperson etc. Childcare costs are also addressed.

There is also an annual support package of £1,500 for each newly-elected member (£750 in subsequent
years) for items such as mobile phones, land-line rental, call charges and purchase of items to help in your work as a councillor e.g. fax, filing cabinet, desk.

For more information about the Members’ Allowance Scheme please visit the Council’s website at  www.leicester.gov.uk. Further information on allowances will be available during the induction period in May 2007.
