DocuMENTOR - Case Studies

Student: Rajesh, age 15
Referral Reasons: Behaviour/Attitude; Lack of organisation;Motivation.
Data used: Behaviour report forms; Feedback from staff.
Meetings: 15 mentoring sessions (11 hours).
The case:
During the summer term of Year 10, Rajesh was considered to be at risk of underachieving at GCSE because of chattiness in class, lack of organisation and occasional inappropriate behaviour. Mentoring sessions were used to advise the student about managing time and workloads; the effective use of homework diaries and monthly planners; ways of responding to situations in school.

Organisation Targets:
Bring homework diary to every session; achieved 6/8.
Complete GCSE coursework by Easter in Y11; achieved - Yes.

Use of homework diary/planner to organise work; achieved - Yes.

Behaviour:
Year before mentoring - four incidents/reports. During mentoring - two.

Staff feedback moved from "Disorganised, distracted, silly" to "more organised", "more focused" and behaviour "not an issue".

Motivation: Student unhappy with an estimated grade given for one of his subjects and said he might not bother with getting the GCSE. Discussion with mentor led to an agreed way forward. Student talked to subject teacher about the situation and given a target:
Show improvement in course/class work and possibility of entry to higher level exam paper. Achieved - Yes

AdditionalSupport: Mentor visited student on work experience placement and helped with preparation for it; supported student on an educational project outside of school; and helped with revision tips.

Exit Strategy: Student access to drop-in service (used). Student invited to return from sixth form college to talk to Y10/11 students about how mentoring helped him, and give advice on studies based on his experience of GCSEs (Offer taken up).

Staff - "He has done better than last year. He was too chatty in the past but has since made a conscious effort to try hard, and has shown some maturity."
