Reading Groups Information Pack
Whatever type of reader you are, and wherever you want to meet up with other readers, we can help you in a variety of ways.
A Reading Group is an exciting opportunity to get together with others to try authors and titles you might not have otherwise considered, find out what other readers thought of a book and let them know what you thought.
East Midlands Libraries have produced a pack of information for Reading Groups. You can download and print the material from the attachments at the bottom of this page. They give hints and tips on running a group.
There are currently over 20 of these groups across the city. Groups meet in each others houses, local libraries, cafes or pubs or other places the group members can easily all get to. The majority of these groups conform to the following specifications:
- Members meet on a regular basis
- There are approximately 10 members
- They select their books form listings provided centrally
- The lists are titles where we have 10 plus copies. We don’t include material which is currently in Top Ten in these lists. Lists are provided for fiction, non-fiction and teenage reading and we add in the number of pages. Many of the groups don’t like to read anything which is too long.
- We organise reserving material centrally and delivery to a library of their choice
- They like to read newish books that have been very popular or controversial i.e. “Tipping the Velvet” and “We need to talk about Kevin”.
- We may be able to provide reading material in other languages, such as Gujarati
- We can support Skills for Life groups with relevant material
There may already be a Readers Group locally that you could join, if not why not start your own? To find out more you could ask at your local library. They offer a range of services to support your reading group, from advice in the selection of books, book loans and space to meet.
