Remodelling the School Workforce

Government Requirements

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) is working together with other educational organisations to introduce changes, which aim to improve teaching in our schools.  Central to these plans is the 'Remodelling the School Workforce'.

Remodelling is about
  • Raising standards - for children and for communities
  • Helping staff give additional expert attention for individual children's needs
  • Developing a career grade structure and improving the training for all staff (teaching and support staff)
  • Freeing teachers from certain tasks to spend more time planning, preparing, teaching and assessing
  • Increasing the number of new teachers and retaining those already in post.

Implications for you and your child

Support staff in schools are taking on a greater number of tasks during the school day. The teacher will remain in charge of your child’s education, but will be using the skills and expertise of other education staff. This means that other, qualified, skilled staff, apart from the actual teachers, will sometimes be supporting your child, and/or the class, in certain subjects and areas of the school. They will be trained, skilled and have the knowledge, to deliver that particular part of the curriculum. The deployment of staff will be at the Head Teacher’s and Governors’ discretion.

A Teaching Assistant could greet your child in the morning and may listen to any concerns you may have. This does not mean that you cannot request a meeting with another member of the school staff at a convenient time.

The focus will always be on what each child is learning, and the progress they are making but recognises that every member of staff has an invaluable contribution to make in raising standards within the school.

Teachers will have more time to concentrate on planning, preparation, teaching and assessment, which you and your child have a right to expect. Leicester City schools are continuing to work very hard to develop education provision to meet the individual needs of every child and support them all to achieve their potential.

Your Child's School

As every child is different every school is also different. Therefore each school’s approach may differ, within the agreed national framework. Your child’s school is working hard as it looks at the best way to organise the teaching and learning of its pupils, staff and the wider community. This has meant people working together in ‘partnership’. Parents also are very important members of the partnership. It is only by working together that we will ensure all our children fulfil their potential and enable them to get the best from their time at school.
