Welfare Funerals
By law, Leicester City Council must cause the disposal of the body of any person who has died or been found dead in the City of Leicester where the deceased has no relatives and it appears that no suitable arrangements for the disposal have been or are being made.
If a person has died in hospital, the funeral arrangements are made by the Hospital Patient Affairs Officer and not by the City Council.
Unfortunately, no assistance is available from Leicester City Council if the funeral has already taken place.
Before we can arrange the funeral, the death must be registered. The home of the deceased is searched for a will to find details of any interested parties and to locate funds to pay for the funeral. If details of friends and relatives are found, they will be contacted and informed of the funeral arrangements.
For further information, please contact the Area Environmental Health Team on 0116 252 6415
Relevant Legislation: Public Health (Control of Diseases) Act 1984.
Relevant Statistics:
From 1st April 2006 to 31st March 2007 we dealt with 33 welfare funerals
