We aim to achieve quality in the environment by influencing development and carrying out improvement schemes. It supplies expert input into the planning of new development and other City Council schemes.
The Group offers advice on the design of buildings and major development areas, and is responsible for Leicester's 25 conservation areas and over 350 listed buildings. Archaeological advice and information is also provided relating to development proposals.
The Group carries out a wide range of landscape and nature conservation projects. It is responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of Leicester's riverside and provides the Riverside Ranger service. The Group supplies advice on proposals to carry out works to trees in conservation areas and other protected trees; will investigate unauthorised works to such trees; and prepares and monitors tree preservation orders.
The Urban Design Group produces Area Strategy Guidance and Site Development Guidance for key areas within the city to stimulate or guide development proposals. This guidance seeks to maximise the quality of new buildings and new places.
The Group provides advice and information about design for disabled people.
The Group was responsible for preparing 'The Quality of Leicester', which can be purchased from the Council, or from bookshops.
