The Daneshill Conservation Area Article 4 Direction was made by the City Council on 30th April 1991, and approved by the Secretary of State for the Environment on 29th October 1991.

The effect of the Article 4 Direction on these properties is that a planning application must be submitted for:

• Extensions to the house
  
• Outside alterations such as new windows and doors unless they are exact copies of the originals
  
• Re-roofing or alterations to chimneys, ridge tiles, etc
  
• Porches
  
• Covering gardens in concrete or tarmac and taking down garden walls or fences to make car parking spaces
  
• Putting up gates, fences or walls
  
• Covering the walls by rendering, stone cladding or other materials
  
• Painting brickwork or stonework
  
• Equipment for receiving satellite TV
  
• Putting up out-buildings within the plot of a larger building
