Conservation Areas in Leicester
The council has a duty to preserve and enhance buildings and areas of special historical or architectural quality. There are currently 24 Conservation Areas and over 350 Listed Buildings in the city.
The 24 designated conservation areas within the City of Leicester, total approximately 336 hectares (about 4.6% of the total area of the city). The first conservation areas were designated in 1969 (New Walk, Castle Gardens and Cathedral/Guildhall), and the most recent designations were Church Gate and Granby Street in 2006. Special planning controls exist in conservation areas and for listed buildings.
