Conservation and the law

Demolition or part demolition
You must get 'Conservation Area Consent' from the Council before demolishing all but very small buildings in a conservation area. You may also need consent for demolishing parts of buildings like chimney stacks or for taking down boundary walls or railings.

Trees
Trees in conservation areas, with a few exceptions, are protected by law and you must give the City Council six weeks ' notice if you intend to cut down, lop or top them.

Satellite antennas
The planning laws contain restrictions on putting up antennas for receiving satellite television, and these controls are tighter in conservation areas than elsewhere. The Council wants to ensure that satellite dishes and other antennas are placed on buildings so as to have the least possible effect on their appearance.
