Listed Buildings

There are over 350 listed buildings in Leicester, which are subject to special planning controls. The City Council also maintains a list of buildings of "local interest". These represent the most visible part of the city's history and are a vital part of its character. The City Council is legally required to maintain for inspection a copy of the list as it relates to Leicester.

The Secretary of State is responsible for the listing of buildings under provisions contained in the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 (part I). A "listed building" is a building of special architectural or historic interest and the Secretary of State is guided by English Heritage when considering the listing of buildings. Generally, listed buildings will be at least 30 years old and all buildings built before 1700 which survive in anything like their original condition will normally be listed.

The Act requires that owners of listed buildings take proper steps to preserve them and Listed Building Consent must be obtained for demolition or for any alterations, internal or external, which materially affect their character. Applications for Listed Building Consent should be made to the City Council although in some cases these must be referred to the Secretary of State. Please contact our Planning service to discuss any proposals or proposed applications affecting listed buildings.

Advice and guidance is available. The Council will also investigate any reports of unauthorised works to these buildings. Please contact our Design and Conservation Team .

The national Heritage Gateway and Images of England projects allow you to search for listed buildings and other historic environment records throughout the whole of England.
