Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment

Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment

In accordance with Planning Policy Statement 3 (Annex C, 2006) Local Authorities are now required to carry out a Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) to identify future sources of land for housing.

The primary role of the SHLAA is to:
  • Identify sites with potential for housing
  • Assess their housing potential
  • Assess when they are likely to be developed
Leicester and Leicestershire local authorities have jointly prepared a methodology for undertaking and updating SHLAAs. A draft methodology was consulted upon in late 2007 and the final methodology, along with a summary of responses to the draft methodology, can be viewed below.

To help identify potential housing sites in the city landowners, developers and property agents are encouraged to submit sites to the Council using the site suggestion form below. Any new sites should be submitted by Friday 4th April 2008.

Completed forms ahould be accompanied by a map that clearly identifies the boundaries of the site. These should be sent to:

SHLAA, Planning Policy and Design, Leicester City Council, A11 New Walk Centre, Welford Place, Leicester, LE1 6ZG or via email to:

Please note that any details submitted cannot be kept confidential.
