Market Place Approach

Market Place Approach

Located at the junction of Horsefair Street, Granby Street, Gallowtree Gate and Halford Street, Market Place Approach is one of the two key meeting places in Leicester. It connects with important city spaces including Market Place and the Town Hall Square.

New granite paving, a revamped seating area and four new trees have transformed the Horsefair Street end of Gallowtree Gate.

Work on the area - known as Market Place Approach, got under way in July as part of the city council’s £19 million city centre refurbishment scheme.

New tree planting has replaced those that were removed, in order to make way for the changes. The central feature marks the end of Gallowtree Gate, with the focus of the Clocktower at the other end. Designs for the space show how the trees will fit into a new seating area, featuring pink granite benches and recessed uplighters that will create a ‘carpet of light’.

This area marks the southern end of Gallowtree Gate; the clock tower dominates the northern end. Emphasis for this important focal point is in the form of a central plane tree, surrounded by a sculptural seating unit with the ‘carpet of light’ lighting feature set into the paving.

Granite has been used throughout to provide a high quality and long lasting scheme, which started around the Clock Tower and High Street - Granby Street will follow later this year.
