Reconnecting the city with its Waterside

This offers one of the best waterside regeneration opportunities in the country and represents the city’s greatest hidden asset. We aim to develop this huge potential by making the ring road easier to cross and reconnecting the city centre with its 18 km of waterfront. Large-scale regeneration of the river and canalside will create over 3,000 new homes, restaurants and leisure, focused on existing and new water frontage.

Other major cities have achieved huge success by transforming their waterfronts. NOW its Leicester’s turn.

Leicester Regeneration Company and Leicester City Council have proposals for the area around the canalside.

Our proposals are:

  • A new, high-quality housing quarter, focused around a new canal basin.
  • Shops and restaurants, and facilities to meet the needs of the local community – perhaps a community centre, school and healthcare centre.
  • Improved access to the river and canal, with waterside walks, more open space, and facilities for boaters.
  • Better links to the city centre and surrounding housing areas for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • A series of changes to Vaughan Way, to reduce its effect as a barrier to the Waterside while keeping the traffic flowing.
