Clock Tower / East Gates
The Clock Tower is a unique and identifiable landmark within Leicester. The setting of this landmark has been greatly enhanced through extensive de-cluttering to achieve an appropriate setting for this major city focal point.. It is now a significant public square with a cosmopolitan character.
The Clock Tower is the most obvious element within a new public open space which includes East Gates and Cheapside (shown in the image above). There are trees, seating and new lighting to enhance the space. The pedestrian character of the rejuvenated square will provide opportunities for meeting, street performance and street cafés. It will also provide a setting for festivals and events.
Main features of the design proposal:
- Significantly enhanced public open space and setting for Clock Tower
- Restoration of Leicester’s landmark feature – an iconic and identifiable place
- Established as an equal public space to the Town Hall Square
- Very significant pedestrian movements, supported by the functional alignment of trees and other furniture
- Vehicles removed from High Street
- Landmark gateway feature to enhance Leicester’s environment and identity
- Trees and seating
- Decluttering to open up the space.
