Climate Change

LCC SPD Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (winner)

Alan Gledhill and Diana Chapman receive their certificate from The Lord Mayor on behalf of Leicester City Council.

Ahead of any Government requirement, this department has introduced the planning requirement for all major developments in Leicester to generate 11% on-site renewable energy. The judges were also impressed that this figure is to rise by a percentage point each year, showing a clear commitment to continual improvement. A technical officer is also on hand to provide support to developers. This project is significant in terms of delivering the city-wide commitment to reducing the impact of climate change as buildings are known to be one of the most significant sectors.

Lancaster School (second)

Pupils from The Lancaster School standing infront of their bike shelter.

There were two key initiatives which singled this school entry out as a contender for the climate change award, these were their impact on school travel through encouraging so many children to cycle to school, and their initiative to develop  the largest school wind turbine to date in Leicester.

FoE - Big Ask campaign (third)

Friends of the Earth campaign in Leicester.

The Group’s main campaign aims to inspire and empower individuals to take practical and political action to combat climate change.  Whilst this is a national campaign, the judges were particularly impressed by the extent of local action achieved by the Leicester group, which resulted in thousands of local people highlighting the issue of tackling climate change to their MPs and adopting a lower carbon lifestyle.
