New Parks Allotment Society (winner)

School Children take a tour at the New Parks Allotments.

Members of the society have put in many hours of voluntary work on their site for the benefit of the whole community. Projects include improving access for the less able, establishing a school allotment and a wild life garden, providing an environmental education resource. The work has benefited the whole community by regenerating a deprived area and helped the environment by improving this land and enabling more people to engage with their local green space.

Leicester Masaya Link & LCC (r/u)

The Leicester Masaya Link Group’s Global Gardeners project promotes active learning for sustainable development with a southern perspective.

Leicester Masaya Link Group’s "Global Gardeners" project promotes sustainable development on a global scale, through Leicester's twinning with Nicaragua. Schools in Nicaragula are learning to plant and maintain an organic garden. In parallel with this, 18 schools in Leicester are using this project to learn more about tropical ecosystems and the interrelation of people and places around the world.

Friends of Highway Spinney (r/u)

School children visit Highway Spinney.

Highway Spinney is one of the largest mature woodlands in Leicester. Volunteers have removed large quantities of rubbish, installed new paths and entrances to improve access for all, and coppiced trees. All of this has increased the use of the Spinney and helped reduce anti-social behaviour.
